What is the Adjunct Faculty Academy?

The Adjunct Faculty Academy is an optional program for all faculty at the College of Southern Maryland. Sessions are held Saturdays, and we rotate between the campuses. You can feel free to attend any or all. Same goes for the Adjunct Faculty Development Committee - come to any of the meetings or all of them. We love to get your ideas.

What is AIM?

AIM stands for Adjunct Informal Meetings. These meetings give faculty the chance to get together in a less formal atmosphere and set the agenda for themselves based on who attends and what they want to talk about. There is no fee, and a meal is always included.

SAVE THE DATES: AIM Group Meetings for 2010

Since 2008 adjuncts from all departments and campuses have met once a month at various restaurants to share their CSM experience. No specific agenda guides the discussions; rather, discussions reflect the experiences and concerns of the adjuncts at the times of the meetings. Discussion topics have included teaching techniques, classroom management, rubrics, department policies, etc. AIM provides adjuncts an excellent opportunity to develop supportive relationships with others in their departments and from other campuses. A grant from The Division of Distance Learning and Faculty Development (DLF) pays for the meals enjoyed at the meetings.

Keynote Project Report

Alison Bode recently completed her Adjunct Certification Level III project and submitted her report. Some of the highlights from her report:

On the blog, I found a request for help in planning a social justice event for the La Plata campus. Since social justice is a cause I support, and the help needed seemed to be mostly organizational, which is something I can do, I agreed to serve on the La Plata Social Justice Committee and submitted a proposal for Social Justice Day as my keynote project.

I began by meeting with the committee, composed of Beth Settle of the Teacher Education Department, Ed Schauf of the Criminal Justice Department and me, on Thursday, March 12. At that meeting, we discussed the format we envisioned for the event, when and where the event would take place, and what aspect of planning each committee member would undertake. My primary area of responsibility was publicity, and I was charged with contacting the Marketing Department, creating and distributing fliers, and seeing that the event was mentioned through on-campus outlets, such as The Friday Report and the “What’s Happening at CSM” online calendar. Other members were charged with enlisting a speaker, arranging a meeting space, and ordering refreshments.

In addition to my publicity duties, I volunteered to procure awards for the social justice projects to be displayed at the event. I purchased certificate paper and ribbons and prepared 24 awards for the projects. On the day of the event, I served as a judge to score the projects, and every student who submitted a project received an award.

On the day of the event, I helped to set up projects, and brought one of my English 1010 classes to the event. Our social justice day included short presentations by Patrick Allen and Linda Morales, projects on gender, race, class, sexual orientation, and other issues, activities for students to participate in to enhance their awareness of social justice, and refreshments. About 40 people attended the event, which was held in BI 113 from 1 – 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2009.

MCAPD Conference

The Maryland Consortium for Adjunct Faculty Professional Development (MCAPD) is holding it's annual conference on October 3, 2009 at the Community College of Baltimore County, Catonsville.

MCAPD conferences are designed to rejuvenate and inspire faculty and administrators to try new teaching and learning strategies. Meeting new colleagues will expand your Maryland network and provide opportunities for future collaborations. These conferences enable adjunct faculty to offer presentations and workshops to share experiences with peers across the state and to serve as evidence of professional activity in the higher education community.

CSM will pay the registration fee for any CSM faculty or staff member who registers by September 25th. You can get more information about the conference at: http://ola.aacc.edu/mcapd/conference.html. Please do NOT follow the instructions on their form, though. Instead, simply let me know you want to go with an e-mail telling me you want to be registered (ssubocz@csmd.edu). That way, we can just register everyone at once and write one check.

We will work out some carpools later, too, so CSM can reimburse our carpool drivers.

Adjunct Faculty Development Committee Mission

The Adjunct Faculty Development Committee
(Subcommittee of the Faculty Development Committee)

Mission Statement: The Adjunct Faculty Development Committee attends to the specific training and development needs of the College’s adjunct faculty members.

Committee Membership: Full-time faculty representatives, DLF Director, all adjunct faculty, and all ConEd instructors may participate. Co-chairs (representing full-time faculty and adjunct/ConEd faculty) are elected annually by the membership. Adjunct co-chairs will be elected with an effort to represent multiple campuses.
